The best NEW Android games from March 2022

Empire Defender TD

Price: Free to play

Empire Defender TD is a pretty typical mobile tower defense game. You build towers, lay down heroes, and use both to defeat waves of bad guys. The hero is movable after placement and you play a pretty active role in moving the hero around to help out your various towers. The game also includes 120 maps, various heroes and towers, various types of enemies, and you can play the game offline. It’s a free-to-play game that tries to up the difficulty enough to get you to purchase stuff, but you can beat the game without purchases with a little practice.

Final Fantasy VI

Price: $17.99

Final Fantasy VI is the sixth and final release from the Pixel Remaster series. It’s the same old Final Fantasy VI game fans know and love, but with a visual makeover. Whether or not you like the new graphics is subjective, but the new animations are universally better than the SNES version. It plays the same, the story is the same, and the music is the same, albeit slightly remastered. We would’ve liked controller support along with access to post-game dungeons available in some versions of the game, but otherwise, it’s a solid game that played fine for us.

Hitman Sniper: The Shadows

Price: Free to play

Hitman Sniper: The Shadows is the latest game in the strategy shooter series. It plays like many of its predecessors. You start out on a perch with a gun and a target. Your goal is to eliminate the target without causing too much of a ruckus. It has multiple maps, different rifles, and each target has its own backstory. It also has a PvP mode that the game leans on quite a bit and we think it works better as a single-player game. Most of the negative reviews are for bugs that we expect Square Enix to fix over time.

Hyde and Seek

Price: Free to play

Hyde and Seek is a board game with a heavy emphasis on the story. You play the role of Kate, who disguises herself as a man and runs away after becoming a wanted criminal. You move around the game board like a board game and progress the story. There are enemies to defeat and items to collect as well. It’s a well-executed game with the exception of microtransactions. The game limits you to a small number of levels per day unless you watch ads or pay money. You can finish it with some patience, but we would’ve liked longer per-day playtimes.

Mini Basketball

Price: Free to play

Mini Basketball is an arcade basketball game. You start by building and customizing a team. Then, you play actual basketball. The controls are simple, but effective. It’s a fun game to play, but you’ll likely spend a good percentage of your time building and customizing. You play against bots and, in true gaming fashion, the game likes to juice the excitement by altering things like shot accuracy to keep games close. It can be frustrating, but it is an arcade game and not a full basketball game.

MLB Tap Sports

Price: Free to play

Glu released its latest MLB Tap Sports game this last month. It features updated rosters, new leaderboards, and the usual array of seasonal events, challenges, and rewards. It’s one of the few games in the Play Store with officially licensed content. It’s a little bit basic in terms of gameplay. It’s mostly tapping controls so you don’t get the granularity that baseball fans typically enjoy on console games. Most of the game is the management of your team and various upgrades. It definitely has its ups and downs, although its downs are pretty predictable. It’s a free-to-play game, after all.

My Darkest Moment

Price: $0.99

My Darkest Moment is a story-driven adventure game with some puzzle elements. Players walk the streets of the game while the protagonist deals with depression and exclusion. The mechanics are simple puzzles that shouldn’t take too much time to solve. The actual draw here is the story. Now, here’s the thing. Whether or not this game works for you depends heavily on whether or not you relate to the protagonist. It’s a relatively short game, but it’s also pretty cheap with no additional in-app purchases.

Phobies

Price: Free to play

Phobies is a card dueling game with a fun little premise. The cards you collect are named after various phobias and you play them against opponents. At its core, it’s a pretty standard strategy card game. You play cards on the battlefield to give yourself an advantage. The playstyle is lightly reminiscent of a tactical RPG. You get new cards through packs that you can grind for or buy. Of course, buying them makes life faster and easier. You can still put together a good deck over time. It’s decent for what it is and it was released without a ton of bugs like many newer games.

Puzzle Quest 3

Price: Free to play

Puzzle Quest 3 is the latest game in the long-running and popular arcade game. The series was one of the original match-three combat games and the mechanics here aren’t all that different. You match shapes to deal damage to your opponent and try to beat them before they beat you. There are a few different classes to play, a PvP mode, and you level up as you go. The game has a much more aggressive in-app purchase strategy than prior games and that has irritated players. Hopefully, they balance that out before it gets too nasty.

The Secret of Cat Island

Price: Free to play

The Secret of Cat Island is an adventure game mixed with a city-builder. You start with very little and create your little village. Meanwhile, you also travel around the game world to discover new and interesting things. It’s very similar to games like Family Island and this game doesn’t stray far from that premise. It’s meant mostly for relaxing and having something to do on breaks at work. Those looking for extra depth likely won’t find it. It’s a decent game if you’re into these kinds of games, but it’s not different enough from other games in this genre to attract new players.
